A Goodbye Note to Mrs. John L. Strong

C'est tragique! The stationer to tastemakers, socialites, celebrities, and British nobility has apparently fallen prey to the recession. Mrs. John L. Strong has officially announced that the doors are closing.  This has the abysmal air of fate about it - the line was founded in 1929 by Flora strong, and managed to thrive during the Great Depression.  The official press release only came out today, but the online catalogue has already been dismantled; alas, there isn't even a silver-lining sale.  All we can do is mourn.

R.I.P. I can't believe they did even have a going out of business sale....I would've stocked up!

Interesting. As someone in the biz, I was wondering how long some of those prices would hold in this weary economy. Aa true icon, and the new owners just took it over a few years ago. they will be missed.

I was at a DC Design Bloggers tea last Saturday and everyone started getting text messages regarding the closing. Another icon bites the dust.

G - I wondered the same thing frankly. But some of the higher priced places have actually been insulated in this economy. Perhaps there was more to it than the customer base.

Anne - I'd certainly like to know! I even tried to check Bloomingdales and a few other retailers they sold through, but all gone.
