Milledgeville and the Architecture of the South

One of my favorite reads, Style Court, had a wonderful post recently about the little town of Milledgeville, GA, and upcoming exhibits at Georgia College. I visited Milledgeville earlier this summer, and the town itself is a carefully staged exhibition: row upon row of columned homes, framed in brick walks and languid trees. Just about an hour South of metro Atlanta, it's worth a day trip when you're next in the South's megalopolis. Be sure to take your camera.

Map, here. Visit my post on Milledgeville for more pictures and history.

P.S. While in Milledgeville be sure to visit Flannery O'Connor's Andalusia. Read about the history of her farm and home here.

All images, my own. Do not copy without permission.

Your photos are gorgeous -- particularly love how haunting the last one is.

Thanks Averill - when I drove over the bridge and saw the tracks curving away like that I had to stop. The old railroads are as much a part of the South's topography as Appalachia or the MIssissippi River.

Hope you had a chance to swing through Madison! We are fortunate that Georgia is full of beautiful old architecture.

So beautiful! When I was little I loved southern architecture so much that I actually had a playhouse that looked quite similar to the one from Gone with the Wind. I'd love to tour this town someday.

p.s. Thanks for weighing in today on the white debate!
